Yesterday Nevaeh and I sowed some more seeds; parsley, lettuce, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and capsicum while Kian painted some of the wood we are using for the gardens. Then today, he painted more while I started building up the garden with cardboard, newspaper and sticks, and Nevaeh potted around in the dirt. We also went out and bought some young herbs.

We have mushrooms!

So this is what we have to work with;

Its difficult to capture it all in one photo. Theres heaps of space for children and a dog to run around, plus a trampoline, vege gardens, compost bins, a worm farm and one day maybe a rabbit hutch.

And there is a lemon tree;

I want to learn more about which fruit trees can grow well in pots. We don’t own the property so probably wont be planting fruit trees here.

Clean up

I had to clean up the gardens a bit since we’re moving. We pulled the few remaining carrots, silverbeet and one pumpkin.

I was going to transplant some of the other stuff over to the new house, but I’m not going to bother now – the cabbages, spinach, brocolli and cauliflower we’re already pretty munted thanks to the dogs and white butterflies, and the garlic probably wasn’t going to produce anything anyway. About 6 weeks ago, I planted some garlic cloves, then I went to a gardening workshop run by the Supergrans and PNCC and learnt that most of the garlic we buy in the supermarket comes from China and is iradiated when it gets here!! So I’m going to go pick up some NZ organic garlic today from Steves bulk barn to plant at the new place.

Winter seedlings

These are some seedlings Nevaeh and I sowed about a week ago. Beans, peas, chives, spring onion, cabbage, cauliflower, and spinach. I just used bought compost for these ones and left them in the hot water cupboard for the first 3 days until they popped up, then I leave them on the windowsill during the day and put them back in the hot water cupboard overnight.

Random pertinent tip #1

One of the reasons I started this blog is because I need a reliable space to store gardening information and tips. I’m an amateur and have aquired a bit of knowledge through reading, experience, experiment, talking to others etc. I also have scraps of paper with random gardening tips lying around all over the place. So, I’m starting a Random pertinent tips section…

Random pertinent tip #1; Save eggshells to use as an organic pest control. Dry the eggshells, crush them up and sprinkle around the plants that slugs like, like cabbages. Slugs wont crawl over the sharp eggshells.
